How to Calculate and Solve for Electron Mobility | Electrical Properties

Last Updated on August 10, 2022

The electron mobility is illustrated by the image below.

To compute for electron mobility, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Electrical Conductivity (σ), Number of Free Conductivity Electrons (n) and Electrical Charge (e).

The formula for calculating electron mobility:

μe = σ/n|e|

Where:

σ = Electron Mobility
σ = Electrical Conductivity
n = Number of Free Conductivity Electrons
e = Electrical Charge

Let’s solve an example;
Find the electron mobility when the electrical conductivity is 28, the number of free conductivity electrons is 7 and the electrical charge is 2.

This implies that;

σ = Electrical Conductivity = 28
n = Number of Free Conductivity Electrons = 7
e = Electrical Charge = 2

μe = σ/n|e|
μe = 28/7|2|
μe = 28/7(2)
μe = 28/14
μe = 2

Therefore, the electron mobility is 2 m²/(V.s).

Calculating the Number of Free Conductivity Electrons when the Electron Mobility, the Electrical Conductivity and the Electrical Charge is Given.

n = σ / σ x e

Where:

n = Number of Free Conductivity Electrons
σ = Electron Mobility
σ = Electrical Conductivity
e = Electrical Charge

Let’s solve an example;
Find the number of free conductivity electrons when the electron mobility is 10, the electrical conductivity is 60 and the electrical charge is 3.

This implies that;

σ = Electron Mobility = 10
σ = Electrical Conductivity = 60
e = Electrical Charge = 3

n = σ / σ x e
n = 60 / 10 x 3
n = 60 / 30
n = 20

Therefore, the number of free conductivity electrons is 20.

Calculating the Electrical Charge when the Electron Mobility, the Electrical Conductivity and the Number of Free Conductivity Electrons is Given.

e = σ / σ x n

Where:

e = Electrical Charge
σ = Electron Mobility
σ = Electrical Conductivity
n = Number of Free Conductivity Electrons

Let’s solve an example;
Find the electrical charge when the electron mobility is 5, the electrical conductivity is 50 and the number of free conductivity electrons is 5.

This implies that;

σ = Electron Mobility = 5
σ = Electrical Conductivity = 50
n = Number of Free Conductivity Electrons = 5

e = σ / σ x n
e = 50 / 5 x 5
e = 50 / 25
e = 2

Therefore, the electrical charge is 2.
