How to Calculate and Solve for Gross Irrigation Requirement | Irrigation Water Requirement

The formula for calculating gross irrigation requirement;

GIR = FIR / ηc

Where:

GIR = Gross Irrigation Requirement
FIR = Field Irrigation Requirement
ηc = Water Conveyance Efficiency

Let’s solve an example;
Find the gross irrigation requirement when the field irrigation requirement is 72 and the water conveyance efficiency is 12.

This implies that;

FIR = Field Irrigation Requirement = 72
ηc = Water Conveyance Efficiency = 12

That is, GIR = FIR / ηc
GIR = 72 / 12
GIR = 6

Therefore, the gross irrigation requirement is 6.

Calculating the Field Irrigation Requirement when the Gross Irrigation Requirement and the Water Conveyance Efficiency are Given

FIR = GIR x ηc

Where;

FIR = Field Irrigation Requirement
GIR = Gross Irrigation Requirement
ηc = Water Conveyance Efficiency

Let’s solve an example;
Find the field irrigation requirement when the gross irrigation requirement is 10 and the water conveyance efficiency is 14.

This implies that;

GIR = Gross Irrigation Requirement = 10
ηc = Water Conveyance Efficiency = 14

FIR = GIR x ηc
Then, FIR = 10 x 14
FIR = 140

Therefore, the field irrigation requirement is 140.

Calculating the Water Conveyance Efficiency when the Gross Irrigation Requirement and the Field Irrigation Requirement are Given

ηc = FIR / GIR

Where;

ηc = Water Conveyance Efficiency
GIR = Gross Irrigation Requirement
FIR = Field Irrigation Requirement

Let’s solve an example;
Given that the gross irrigation requirement is 5 and the field irrigation requirement is 20. Find the water conveyance efficiency?

This implies that;

GIR = Gross Irrigation Requirement = 5
FIR = Field Irrigation Requirement = 20

ηc = FIR / GIR
So, ηc = 20 / 5
ηc = 4

Therefore, the water conveyance efficiency is 4.
