The formula for calculating stream density:

SD = Ns / Ab

Where:

SD = Stream Density
Ns = No of Stream
Ab = Area of Basin

Let’s solve an example;
Find the stream density when the no of stream is 12 and the area of basin is 4.

This implies that;

Ns = No of Stream = 12
Ab = Area of Basin = 4

That is, SD = Ns / Ab
SD = 12 / 4
SD = 3

Therefore, the stream density is 3.

Calculating for No of Stream when the Stream Density and the Area of Basin are Given

Ns = SD x Ab

Where;

Ns = No of Stream
SD = Stream Density
Ab = Area of Basin

Let’s solve an example;
Find the no of stream when the stream density is 28 and the area of basin is 12.

This implies that;

SD = Stream Density = 28
Ab = Area of Basin = 12

Ns = SD x Ab
So. Ns = 28 x 12
Ns = 336

Therefore, the no of stream is 336.

Calculating the Area of Basin when the Stream Density and the No of Stream are Given

Ab = Ns / SD

Where;

Ab = Area of Basin
SD = Stream Density
Ns = No of Stream

Let’s solve an example;
Find the area of basin when the stream density is 20 and the no of stream is 80.

This implies that;

SD = Stream Density = 20
Ns = No of Stream = 80

Ab = Ns / SD
That is, Ab = 80 / 20
Ab = 40

Therefore, the area of basin is 40.
